Roxana Daneshjou for Tahirih
Dear Friend,
For my birthday, I'm raising gifts for the Tahirih Justice Center, a non-profit which partners with courageous asylum seekers, largely women and girls, and also LGBTQ+ individuals, who come to the US striving for freedom from gender-based violence. Tahirih's clients are survivors of forced marriage, human trafficking, honor killing, female genital cutting, and domestic violence. Tahirih provides free and full legal representation as well as wraparound social services, from food, to housing, to allow clients to be fully present in their legal work.
Tahirih also strives to change policies to increase women and girls' access to justice. For example, Tahirih was a catalyst in all 35 states which have passed laws to protect young children against coerced marriages, which have protected an estimated 10,000+ girls. This year, Tahirih added Virginia and New Hampshire to the 14 States that have officially banned child marriage and have helped introduce a bill in DC!
A gift of $50 helps cover the transportation costs for a survivor to attend legal hearings.
a gift of $100 helps cover the cost of a doctor's visit for a trauma survivor.
a gift of $250 helps cover translation and interpretation for a survivor to discuss their case in their native language.
"Women's rights are an essential part of the overall human rights agenda, trained on the equal dignity and ability to live in freedom all people should enjoy." -Ruth Bader Ginsburg
