As an Americorps VISTA serving with Montana Food Bank Network, I only get a small living stipend each month. I’ve committed to living at the poverty level for the whole year. This is particularly relevant to my work at the food bank, as I myself now qualify for food stamps. However, even as I’m gaining firsthand experience in living paycheck to paycheck, I recognize that resources are even tighter for households with children, with debt, or with medical problems. I’m committing to the $5 a day challenge to raise awareness of the critical part that SNAP plays in my life and the lives of so many families in Montana, and to bring home the fact that there is no single face of hunger—you never know when you, or someone close to you, will rely on this assistance to get through the month.

About this Campaign

Laura Pugh

16,000 Missoulians struggle to put healthy food on their tables. Together, we can change that.

Double SNAP Dollars envisions a Montana where everyone, regardless of income, is inspired and empowered to incorporate local, nutritious produce into their diet.

134,000 Montanans, including 16,000 Missoulians, experience hunger, which means they also struggle to put healthy food on their tables. For these fellow Montanans, their limited incomes affect the quantity - and quality - of food they can eat. Together, we can change that.

Everyone deserves to eat nourishing food that makes them feel good. Double SNAP Dollars helps make that happen by making fresh, local produce affordable for all. Initiated in 2015, the program doubles buying power at farmers’ markets, on CSA shares, and at the Missoula Community Food Co-op for Montanans who access Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) benefits each month, all while supporting local farmers and ranchers. Double SNAP has been so well-received that program participation grew by 100% in the past year.

“I love the fact that I don’t have to choose between eating healthy and having enough to last all month!” – Double SNAP Dollar participant

Growing participation in Double SNAP means more low income Montanans are accessing local, healthy food – a testament to the interconnectedness and vibrancy of our communities. However, demand for the program will soon outweigh funding for the remainder of the 2017 season, leaving many who access fresh produce and local food through Double SNAP with fewer options.

Together, we can meet the high demand for healthy, local food. We need your help to make sure all Montanans experiencing hunger can afford to buy the local produce that nourishes healthy bodies and strengthens healthy communities.

We’re raising $16,000 for the 16,000 Missoulians who experience hunger.

Every dollar donated means one more Montanan has greater access to the healthy food we all crave and deserve.

Any additional dollars raised will be used to support Double SNAP Dollars programs throughout Montana in 2018.

Will you help us ensure that all Montanans have the opportunity to eat well and be healthy for more seasons to come?
