Joyce's 2022 NYC Marathon
I am an architect and a professor of architecture at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, where I have been based for 17 years.
Cities, buildings, and landscapes inspire me. I love exploring new places. For me, running is not only a form of exercise, but it is a way to engage with the environment. In enabling me to scan my surroundings in a meditative way, it is an activity that helps me create a space for my mind to think clearly and wander lucidly. I often go for a run if I need to think through a problem, reflect on an issue, or daydream about a creative project.
Running has been truly impactful for me in the course of my life, both personally and professionally. I believe that it is incredibly important that every person -- regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, or socio-cultural background -- is able to empower themselves with the physical, sociological, and mental benefits that running (as well as other sports) can give them. Many events in our recent past have shown that we are NOT living in an inclusive and just world. Not only are the rights and dignity of women still being challenged, but so are the rights and dignity of so many others.
I am excited by Free to Run’s mission to empower girls and women with running, sports, and outdoor adventure, and am inspired by the work that the organization has already been doing. Enabling mixed-gender marathons and creating safe spaces for women and girls to do sports in challenging contexts are impressive and courageous feats. I am thrilled to support this organization.

Please donate to help our amazing runners reach their fundraising goals.
Your donations will help Free to Run bring running, outdoor adventure, and leadership to amazing girls in the Free to Run program.
Free to Run is a 501(c)3 charity that uses adventure sports to develop female leaders in Afghanistan and Iraq because they can and will be a force for positive change in their communities.
The women and girls in our programs include some of the most vulnerable members of society.
The New York City Marathon and other race-based fundraising events are the main source of funding for Free to Run's work with girls in our programs. We ask that you please support our work by making a donation to one of our 2022 NYC Marathon runners.
THANK YOU!
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SPORT
But it's not just about sports. It's a chance to experience a full and free life.
With programs in Afghanistan and Iraq, Free to Run focuses specifically on supporting women and girls living in conflict areas. Why? We believe they are in greatest need and they hold the most potential for positive change.
Everyone deserves the chance to run, play and experience the outdoors. At Free to Run, we are working tirelessly to make that happen.
