San Antonio Zoo plans to expand the jaguar habitat. Plans include the addition of an overhead catwalk that will connect the jaguars’ existing habitat to another nearby habitat, increasing their overall living space. The catwalk will not only go over guests as they stroll by the current jaguar habitat, but it will lead the jaguars into the Amazonia habitat where they can walk along the river bed before making their way into the secondary habitat. Costs to complete this innovative habitat are estimated at nearly $2 million.
Once complete, San Antonio Zoo will be the only zoo in the country to offer this unique catwalk for our jaguars as it will reinforce two important natural behaviors – it lets them hang high in a canopy type setting and it allows them to explore the river’s edge.
