Small Estate Help Desk – Attorney Volunteers Needed

Every other Thursday from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM

Make a significant impact on the San Antonio community in just a few hours by volunteering at SALSA’s Small Estate Clinic.

As a volunteer attorney at the Small Estate Clinic, you’ll meet with clients in a “help desk” setting at the Bexar County Courthouse, located at 100 Dolorosa, San Antonio, Texas. You will review and edit small estate affidavits, or discuss alternative probate options that better suit the client’s need and give advice related to deeds.

What to Expect:

Once you register, you’ll receive a confirmation email with access to SALSA’s Small Estates Clinic resources page, including training materials, flow charts, and guides.
At the clinic, you'll receive a copy of the client’s completed small estate affidavit and any other relevant documents. If the client hasn’t completed or filed an SEA, you’ll be provided with a blank form to complete for the client.
Additional materials, such as the Affidavit of Inability to Pay Court Costs and SEA Completion Instructions, will also be provided.
Mentors and SALSA staff will be on standby to assist with any questions during the clinic.
During your volunteer shift, you’ll discuss the client’s estate to determine the most appropriate course of action, whether it’s correcting their SEA, completing a new SEA, or recommending an alternative probate path such as an Affidavit of Heirship or Independent Administration. After assisting the client, you’ll complete a closure form to help SALSA determine if follow-up services are needed. If a more complex probate process is required, SALSA staff will provide the client with a referral for extended services.
