The Time is Now
On January 20th, the United States will swear in a new president. Donald Trump's campaign rhetoric, his picks for his transition team and cabinet, and his inauguration schedule all point to one conclusion: The incoming president does not take seriously the rights of US citizens as guaranteed by the Constitution. Trump has established the least diverse team of leaders in recent history, and his inauguration will prove to be a ceremony anchored in the conservative Christian faith that helped elect him. This will not stand.
The Commander-in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces should demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all service members, regardless of their religious background.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation was founded to defend the Constitutional guarantee of religious freedom for members of the military. Why is this important? Because high-ranking officials within the military, including the incoming president, have sought to elevate the practice of one faith over others. Military personnel report observing bullying, harassment, and exclusion as a result of their religion. The First Amendment can only be truly enacted within the military when a true separation of church and state is observed.
Stand With Us for Freedom
Trump's rhetoric and leadership practice will only increase these concerning events. We must be prepared to defend the right of religious freedom for all members of our military, defending their freedoms as they sacrifice to defend ours. Trump is notoriously litigious, and we are prepared to face him in court. As Trump transitions into the role of President, we must build our war chest and prepare to stand up to this bully. We will not back down and we will not be silent.
