About Matchmaker aka Adoption Counselor

The role of the Adoption Counselor is to evaluate a potential adopter and then support them through the process of adopting their perfect German Shepherd. We do this because we love the dogs and want to find the perfect match in their furever home!

When someone submits an application to adopt a dog from GSRNC, the application is reviewed by our senior counselors, then assigned to an Adoption Counselor (maybe you!) You call the person promptly to chat about their interest in adoption and to schedule a time when you can visit their home.

When you arrive for the home visit, the potential adopter might think you’re there as an inspector – but you’re not! Yes, you want to make sure that they represented their home environment accurately on their application, but mostly you want to talk more in depth about their lifestyle and how they hope to integrate a GSD.

Volunteers with experience might volunteer to be one of our Regional Adoption Counselor Coordinators, who review applications when they are sent in, and then assign them to available Adoption Counselors.

Volunteers are always needed to help with the paperwork, follow up on the progress of applications, and assist in finding & training new Adoption Counselors.

WHAT IT TAKES

Time commitment: 10-15 hours per month, semi-flexible (we like to finish our assessments within 2 weeks)

Location: Home based, but must travel to visit potential adopters at home

Technology needs: Email & phone connectivity

Skills: Familiarity with GSDs, good with people (both on the phone & in person), ability to submit reports promptly
