THE NEHEMIAH PROJECT
Beginnings are important. You can never truly know who you are or where you are going without first knowing where you have been. It began right here at the Buckhorn Lake Presbyterian Church over 100 years ago. Rev. Harvey Murdoch left the city life and a financially stable congregation in Brooklyn, NY to begin something new in a place that lacked resources, spiritual care, health care, education, and orphan care; all because the need was greater here than in Brooklyn. While the area lacked all these resources, he found other resources that paved the way for his leadership successes.
The resources he found in abundance were the resources found in the people of this Eastern KY community. He found people who loved God and desired his shepherding of the community of faith. He found people that donated land to begin a new work to serve the people. He found people who gave of their time to volunteer to clear land, build structures and whatever other labor was needed. He found a people who were resilient and knew how to live off the land that supplied food and healing herbs. He found a people who were survivors of high poverty, illiteracy, bad health and terrible accidents. He found a people that he fell in love with and a people who loved him back.
During his tenure, he developed and built structures to house a church, a school, a medical facility and residences for orphaned children. All of this made possible by people outside of the community who prayed, provided and paid for materials and labor. All of this made possible by people within the community who prayed, provided labor and supported every effort he sought to provide.
Over a century later, Rev. Murdoch’s God-given mission is still being lived out at Buckhorn Children and Family Services. Even though the times, programs and services have changed, the original mission of serving people is still being lived out each and everyday as we seek to Provide a Sanctuary of Health, Healing and Hope to at-risk children, youth and families.
When children and youth come into our residential care they are looking for a safe place that offers healing and hope. Upon arrival to campus, the first things they observe are our facilities. The visual effects that our facilities project are critical to their feelings of safety and security.
Our facilities haven’t had a coordinated remodeling since the 1990s and its time has now come. It is our goal through this Project to give our infrastructure a makeover to address the critical needs of the Cottages our children and youth reside in, and to brighten it up with colors that are therapeutically warm and inviting.
Would
you consider joining our Nehemiah Project? Our infrastructure is in critical
need of revitalization. ALL monies donated to this Project will go to buy
materials. Mission Serve, made up of over 150 volunteers from across the nation, will provide FREE LABOR in June 2017 for all the renovations.
As the people rallied in the beginning, will YOU rally with us today?
