The Pioneer Pantry came into effect in the fall of 2019 as a resource to provide essentials to Glenville State University students. Nonperishable food, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and school supplies are available to Glenville State University students who need it - all at no cost.
A survey of GSU students revealed that 35% of students said there was a time when they didn't have enough food themselves. In that same survey, 60% of respondents said they knew of another student who didn't have enough food.
Since the Pioneer Pantry opened, numerous students have been able to take advantage of these free items. It can be challenging to keep up with the needs of our students - but donations received through our November campaign will ensure our shelves are fully stocked with necessities.
With the upcoming holidays, we have several international students as well as student athletes who remain on campus or in the community over these extended breaks and holidays. During these times, while the cafeteria is closed, and shuttle buses cease to run, the Pioneer Pantry gives students an on-campus option for food, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene items.
Students often have little money left to purchase food and personal hygiene items after paying their tuition and other expenses. We never question a student's need, and have strategically placed the Pioneer Pantry in a discreet location, so students do not have to feel uncomfortable when stopping by to pick up items.
