School-Based Health

Where Health and Education Meet

A fundraising campaign for Shawnee Christian Healthcare Center

Shawnee Christian Healthcare Center (SCHC) provides health and dental services at three school-based health centers in West Louisville and will be expanding dental services during the 2018-19 school year.

We've seen the impact that school-based health can have on the lives of our students. Take "Chris": He is eight and lives in the Shawnee neighborhood with his grandmother. Chris's grandmother is on a fixed low-income, she doesn't have a car, and she has a hard time getting around. Chris tries really hard in school, but his teacher says recently he has a hard time focusing on his work and has missed multiple days of school As a result, his grades are going down. Chris complained of pain in his mouth and his teacher sent him to the school clinic. SCHC dental staff was able to provide an examination during which they found that Chris had multiple large cavities and tooth decay. He had never been to a dentist before because it was too expensive and too hard to get there. SCHC staff helped Chris and his grandmother with transportation to the main SCHC dental clinic where he was able to receive the fillings and restorative work he needed. Chris’s story is not uncommon. The children and families we serve experience barriers that keep them from getting healthcare. With SCHC’s whole person approach and sliding fee scale, we are able to ease burdens for families and give them the healthcare they need. With your help, we can help more children like Chris get the services they need to live healthy lives.

You can help SCHC by praying for us, volunteering your time, or donating to support school-based health.
