IMAGINE SAFER ROADS, SAFE's VISION
Imagine a city where everyone can feel safe walking, biking, or rolling down the street. A city where children can play outside without fear of being hit by a car. A city where families can bike to the park without worrying about their safety and a city where dangerous drivers are actually held accountable for the harm they cause.
This is the vision of Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE). We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to making our streets safer for everyone. We believe that everyone has the right to move around their city safely, regardless of their age, ability, or mode of transportation.
In 2022, there were 6,969 people severely injured or killed just in Los Angeles County. This includes 1,206 pedestrians and 326 cyclists. This is a public health crisis that we cannot ignore. That is why we're launching our Safer Streets for Everyone Campaign.
Funds raised from this campaign will be used to support SAFE's programs:
- SAFE Support: free support for those who need a helping hand after a traffic collision or for family members who have lost a loved one due to traffic violence.
- Legislative Advocacy: supporting sensible legislation to make our roads safer and educating legislators on policies that could harm vulnerable road users.
- Advocacy & Activism: improving our streets takes an army of activists and advocates to change minds and roads to make them safer, especially when elected officials think the status quo on our streets is acceptable.
- Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition: a unique high school level film competition where Hollywood filmmakers help mentor students to make creative and impinging road safety public service announcements.
- Research, Documentation, and Reporting: holding elected officials accountable for safer roads and changing their minds requires work to research, document, and report on road safety inequities.
- Faith for SAFE Streets: a core of faith leaders passionate about road safety issues in their communities and who fight for change through their congregations and with elected officials.
SAFE GETS IT DONE!
Last year alone, SAFE reached over 800 million people through its advocacy, media, hard-hitting reports, research, and PR work, all centered around the need for safer roads. Just a few of the results of SAFE's work:
- Over 4 million dollars of funding was approved for a safer Griffith Park, and a major road in the park was closed to cars and turned into a pedestrian, bicycle, and equestrian path only.
- The community of Angelino Heights has been plagued by street racing and side shows (burnouts, doughnuts, etc.) for over 20 years. At the request of community members, SAFE stepped in and helped to get the roads entirely re-engineered in a matter of months.
- Hundreds of high school students participated in the Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition, learning about the importance of responsible driving, cycling, and pedestrian habits.
- Scores of traffic violence victims and their family members were helped to get back onto their feet by SAFE Support.
- And many, many more recent examples.
HOW CAN ONE PERSON MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
SAFE was started by one person, Damian Kevitt, after he lost his leg and nearly his life after being hit by a car while cycling in Griffith Park in 2013. For his story, please watch this short video by the LA Times. With his passion and the help of many volunteers SAFE was created, proving that ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
We believe that everyone has a role to play in making our streets safer and that you can make a difference. By being part of our Safer Streets for Everyone you can make a difference in our communities, help reduce traffic violence and support those whose lives have been impacted by a traffic collision.
Please stand with us. Together we can make a difference!
