At its most basic level Free Fred Brown is a play about a black
man who becomes the reluctant face of a movement while in prison for “theft of
services” from The National Gas Company.
On a deeper level it is a
collaborative writing, performing and activism experience created to engage
frontline communities in the fight for climate justice. The work intends to
shine a light on the racial disparities that allow those most vulnerable to environmental
and economic crises to suffer the most. More than just a piece of devised
theatre, Free Fred Brown seeks to
engage and embolden these frontline communities to become activists in their
own right. We see Free Fred Brown as an integral part of a
recent joint campaign, led
by PUSH Buffalo in collaboration with The Crossroads Collective*, to prevent a National Fuel proposed rate hike which would disproportionately affect communities of
color in Buffalo. Community outreach is an
important part of our work and the crux of this project. We want to bring Free Fred Brown to any and all communities that want to see it particularly those most affected by the issues the play deals with. We want these audiences to have a platform, to be able to share their stories. We want to create a dialogue and bring narratives to the forefront that are often ignored. We want Free Fred Brown to be a catalyst for the systemic change we desperately need. With your help we can hopefully start moving in the right direction. *a coalition of 8 organizations dedicated to creating a Green economy on Buffalo's frontlines.
