Emily is a beautiful 11-year-old girl who has been a fighter since the day she was born!
We were told she would never leave the NICU and if she did, she would never walk, talk, see, hear, smile or breathe on her own… and she definitely would never see her 1st birthday. She did. They said she wouldn’t see her 2nd birthday. She did. On her 3rd birthday, her neurologist told us she is writing her own story and we are just along for the ride – that’s still true today.
It hasn’t been easy, far from it actually. Emily is unable to walk, talk, sit up – she has the head control of a newborn and relies on us for all her care. She has hydrocephalus, restrictive lung disease, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and she eats through 2 separate feeding tubes. She has had well over 100 hospitalizations and dozens of surgeries. She is cortically blind but has perfect hearing... She SMILES and has the most beautiful giggle you will ever hear!
She fights every single day to be here!
Right now, we must carry her in and out of our home and put her into her wheelchair outside… she is 79lbs and 4 feet 5 inches tall. (mom is 5 feet 2 inches, 130lbs) This is hard, unsafe and almost to the point of being physically impossible. Our home needs a wheelchair ramp and some other modifications to make it wheelchair accessible and as hard as it is to ask for help, we can’t do it alone.
