We are a small rat rescue in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX area. We started the rescue in January of 2018 with the goal of helping to rehome 50 rats over the course of a year who would otherwise be surrendered to a shelter ill-equipped to care for them, given away for free on Craigslist, or released into the wild to fend for themselves. As of November 20th, we have had over 250 adoptions, including several who were transferred from local city shelters as well as from hoarding/animal cruelty cases throughout Texas.
Taking care of so many animals requires lots of time, space, and resources. We are always having to replace hammocks, toys, hides, cages, water bottles, and food bowls. Our rats eat over 20 lbs of food and we go through over 160 liters of bedding every 2 weeks.
The majority of our expenses come from veterinary bills and medication costs. The vast majority of our surrenders are ill, malnourished, mite-infested, pregnant, and/or aggressive. This requires an extensive vet fund, and we are so fortunate to have a local vet who helps us out with our tumor removal and spay/neuter surgeries.
We have had several rats brought to us who were found abandoned in a backyard, covered in parasites and emaciated from having to scavenge for food. We've had rats surrendered who were meant to be snake food, but the snake wasn't interested. Some of our rats have been surrendered due to the owner having to move, deal with a personal emergency, or risking eviction. We have even had a couple of "senior prank" and school experiment rats who would have been discarded after they served their purpose.
For those instances where an owner wishes to keep their rat but cannot due to financial or situational circumstances, our awesome P.A.S.S. (Positive Alternative to Shelter Surrender) Program helps to provide rat owners with veterinary care, temporary boarding, behavioral training, an extra cage, or anything else they may need in order to keep their beloved pet.
Please consider donating to our cause so we can continue providing these empathetic, smart animals with the love and care they deserve while they wait for their forever home!
