Brooklyn Free School (BFS) is an independent school whose mission is rooted in a financial model that gives access to all families. BFS believes that a family's financial contribution should reflect their income, creating a community where all members can feel confident that their contribution is respected, appreciated, and valued. Now, in our 13th year, we are proud that 90 percent of BFS families access the sliding-scale tuition.
Student voice and student choice continue to guide our academic offerings, trips, and activities in a way that reassures BFS students that they are in a place where they can be themselves without judgment. Whether the students are engaged in a theater production of Peter Pan (playing roles assigned by interest and performance ability rather than ethnicity, gender, body type, or physical ability) or creating signs for a “March Against the Unfair Treatment of Black People” led by elementary students demanding a resolution to police misconduct, they understand that they can bring every facet of who they are to school each day.
No matter their age or level of comprehension, our children are affected by the challenges we experience as a society. BFS is uniquely prepared to integrate their awareness into age-appropriate learning and engagement. Our “day on” celebrations of Indigenous Peoples’ Day and MLK Day further demonstrate our commitment to help children connect with one another and with their own sense of justice.
