Each day countless volunteers help our Idaho communities collect, test and deliver life-saving blood. Now more than ever your support is needed to help offset the costs of volunteer recruitment and training, special cleaning and safety stations, purchasing additional equipment and continue our role in supplying blood to Idaho's hospitals.
A few facts about blood;
- Every 2 seconds, someone in American needs blood and the American Red Cross supplies 40% of that need
- 1 in every 7 patients that reports to a hospital needs blood or a blood product and the Red Cross supplies nearly every hospital in Idaho with blood
- 23% of Red Cross blood supplied to hospitals supports a patient with cancer
- We are currently able to supply only 75% of the blood requests from our hospitals given the short supply
- Blood
has a shelf life of 42 days and can not be manufactured. Platelets
(used for cancer treatment and
clotting support) must be used in 5 days!
- Blood cannot be manufactured. It must come from healthy donors
Support is needed for the continuation of our 5 pillar services of the Red Cross Serving Idaho during this Pandemic; Blood Services, Services to our Armed Forces, Disaster Services, International Services and Training and certification Services. The following figures are Idaho-specific responses in 2019.
