You've likely seen or heard about the problem. There have been news articles and tv stories about the dogs and cats that are being abandoned on our streets, in our parks and out in the woods. Pets who were once in a warm home and receiving food from their owners are now for one reason or another, being left to fend for themselves. These abandoned pets are now constantly in search of food, water and shelter. In addition, they need to learn to defend themselves against predators.
The reasons for this happening are numerous. It could be:
- owners can't afford yearly care for them any longer
- the pet may be sick or injured and facing expensive vet care that is not affordable to the owner
- the owner no longer wants an adult dog or cat and wants a puppy or kitten instead
- the pet may be pregnant, and the owner doesn't want to "deal with that"
- landlord of rentals may no longer allow pets
- shelters and rescues are overcrowded and can't take surrenders
- the list goes on
Sadly, we can't adopt ourselves out of this problem. The overpopulation of pets needs to be stopped by addressing the root problem. The continuing cycle of unwanted litters of dogs and cats. This means spaying and neutering. More availability for these services needs to be created. More appointments need to be available for individuals to be able to get this life saving surgery. We need to Stop Pet Overpopulation Together!
